Genetics 101 with Alejandra Cantu Villarreal, MS, CGC. & BRCA STRONG

Alejandra Cantu-Villarreal currently works as a Genetic Counselor at the Miami Cancer Institute in Florida. She received her Master’s in Genetic Counseling in May 2020 from the Joan H. Marks Graduate Program in Human Genetics. As part of her training, she rotated at the Weill Cornell Medicine New York Presbyterian, Jacobi Medical Center, and Montefiore Medical Center. During this time, she also completed an internship for the non-profit organization Positive Exposure. Born and raised in Monterrey, Mexico, Alejandra had previously completed a medical degree and a medical residency in clinical genetics before transitioning to the field of genetic counseling. Due her training, Alejandra has lived in Guadalajara and in San Cristobal de las Casas. In this last location, she completed a year of social service serving the indigenous population of this area. Alejandra joined the Department of Clinical Genetics at Miami Cancer Institute as a genetic counselor in July 2020. Being part of this team brings her great happiness and satisfaction since it allows her to work with a diverse patient population, and offer counseling in her own native language.
