50 symptoms to menopause

“There are 50 symptoms to menopause,”  Dr Somi Javaid stated. My eyes widened as I sat in the audience of Womaness’ Menopositivity tour’s last stop in Chicago. I may have gone to the wrong Ulta, but I eventually made it to the one on Willow. I first found Womaness when looking up symptoms of menopause after my hysterectomy. I was very interested in learning more about their products and what they could do for me as I entered this foreign stage of my life, 20 years too early.

I started with a bundle of their products Kym’s Skincare Routine that includes Let’s Neck -  neck and décolleté serum, The Works - smoothing all over cream, the Overnight Magic, Eye Opener with it’s cooling metal tip and Gone in a Hot Flash - All-Over Cooling Mist.

I then spotted Plump It up - Gentle Retinol Face Serum with Roll-on applicator and I had to try it! I was already starting to seeing way too many fine lines. Fountain of Glow caught my attention with it’s Vitamin C ingredient. I was told it was important to have Vitamin C, SPF and Retinol in your skin routine for aging.

On a side note: Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C Together? Not all powerful skincare ingredients can be mixed, but hyaluronic acid and vitamin C are two that become even stronger when paired with one another. These ingredients can provide both immediate and lasting results when used together in anti-aging formulations.

Fresh & Clean pH-Balanced All-Over Body Wipes and Coco Bliss were added to my cart for body care. Lastly, I took a look at the Menopause Survival Starter Kit that included Me.No.Pause. And Active Glow

I was already on so many meds and supplements, but I thought it can’t hurt to give it a try. So, these items got added to the cart and it was check out time!

I anxiously awaited the arrival of these new products. I’ve been using them for the past two months and so far, the products have been amazing. I’m thrilled to continue using them. I am in menopause because of a preventative hysterectomy. Some women are put into menopause early because of cancer or other medical procedures so I feel it’s important on Liv & Let to talk about this stage of life too!

Ok, now back to the event and the info that I learned from the panel. Not only did it include Dr Somi Javaid, mentioned above, but co-founders Sally and Michelle & Dr. Shelby Harris. I was taking quick notes, so below I’ve bulleted what I was able to jot down. I highly recommend you check out the links for the doctors and the links below to start preparing. It’s not easy being a woman and unfortunately for too long we have not had the programs, research or education. However, with more conversation and more programs we can get ahead of the symptoms! Let’s educate ourselves by taking to our doctors today!

  • What is menopause? Usually it happens around the age of 50 and it’s when you go for 12 months of not having a period. It’s pretty much estrogen withdrawal.

  • So what is peri-menopause? It can begin a decade before menopause. You begin having symptoms of menopause, but you have some degree of bleeding.

  • Why do we get tightness and dryness in our vagina? Estrogen supports the vagina so as we lose it the accordion that once was doesn’t stretch as much anymore and tightens up.

  • Why are women up at 2AM? Is it hormonal, perimenopause? Well 1 our brains are so busy, but 2 when women are seen by sleeping experts they look at their age and how they are breathing at night. Snoring and sleep apnea because the same as men when women enter per-menopause. Women need to work on a dimmer switch versus just an ON/OFF switch.

  • To help with the sleeping: loose clothing, bedding mattress pads, no alcohol, no spicy foods!

  • When we sleep 25% of the night we are in a deep sleep. This is when the human growth hormone comes out and repairs muscles. It’s also when collagen is produced. If we aren’t getting that 25% of deep sleep our muscles aren’t being prepared and collagen isn’t being produced. So how do you get into this deep sleep? Move more!

  • Educate yourself - it’s never early to prepare. Seventy percent of women don’t become informed of menopause until they are in it. Everyone’s journey is different so it’s good to prepare for your journey.  Two key things that you can start with are taking care of your skin and vagina in peri-menopasue. The skin is the first thing that starts to change.

  • Why do women gain weight during menopause? When the estrogen levels go down, the FSH (reproductive hormone) levels go up which slows your metabolism. Unfortunately instead of going into the breast or hips we gain it in the middle section where we have fat pockets and it’s the negative impact of more FSH.

  • To help with weight gain, focus on nutrition! Intermittent fasting does work, but talking to medical provider first is important because there is different timing for each individual pending where you start and how much you want to lose.

  • Also when you don’t sleep your appetite signal gets lower and then the GO EAT hormone goes up!

  • Sally, co-founder- shared that Womaness wanted to start with 3 main symptoms that women face entering menopause and that includes skin, supplement and sexual. They wanted to address changing skin, vaginal dryness, sex wellness, sleep and hot flashes. Also there is NO SOY, NO ESTROGEN, NO PHYTOESTROGENS in their products!

  • A few names to look up HER-MD founded by Dr. Javaid, Isswish and NAMS - !

Thank you Womaness, the Menopositivey tour, Michelle, Sally, Dr Somi Javaid, & Dr. Shelby Harris.
